Medical residents compete tonight to repair fractured shoulders in the Proximal Humerus Fracture Challenge
St. Paul, Minn., - Medical residents will put their surgical performance to the test as they compete against other residents at the second annual Geriatric Trauma Summit.
,br>The challenge involves six teams, each consisting of two University of Minnesota medical residents. Armed with the appropriate tools to surgically fix a "faux" human shoulder (the shoulder is made of foam), each team must be able to fix the broken shoulder bones with the tools they're supplied.
With three ways to fix a shoulder pins, plates and nails each team will put their skills to the test to come up with the best outcome. Images will be taken of each team's surgical fix to determine which team does the best job. The winning team receives a prize.
Following the skills challenge, the medical resident teams will take on the nearly 150 audience participants to find out who can best answer 15 questions related to geriatric care. Participants will select their answers through an automated audience response system.
