Ancker School of Nursing Memorial Scholarship
Endowment Created
As part of the 2008 all-class reunion, the Ancker School of Nursing Memorial Scholarship was created and funded with gifts from alumni totaling nearly $10,000. And then this spring, an Ancker alumna and her husband contributed $17,000 to establish a permanent endowment fund that will support scholarships into the future! (A minimum of $25,000 is required to create a permanently restricted endowment fund). Each year, interest from the endowment will be awarded as scholarships in the name of the Ancker School of Nursing.
Scholarship Guidelines Established
This past winter, the guidelines for the Ancker School of Nursing Scholarship were created to target applicants who meet the following criteria:
1. A current Regions Hospital Employee.
2. A current RN who is accepted and enrolled in a bachelors completion program or a masters or Ph.D. program with a nursing/health concentration.
3. A nurse who is planning to continue his/her employment with Regions for the foreseeable future. (Preferred not required).
Many nurses are being required to advance their education. Since there is already a scholarship at Regions for new or lower level health care employees, these criteria were developed to support a unique group of nurses who are future teachers, managers as well as hands-on caregivers.
First Scholarships Awarded
In April 2009, the first scholarship awards of $600 each were made in honor of the Ancker School of Nursing. Mercy Paul, R.N. and Jackie Chute, R.N. were selected after interviewing with a committee of Ancker graduates including Mary Newton, 61, Anna Fuhrmann, 62, Fran Reiser, 60 and Regions Hospital employees Cathy McCallister, R.N. and Keevan Kosidowski.
On May 11, 2009, the scholarships were presented to the recipients during a breakfast reception hosted by the Foundation and Nursing Administration. Mary Brainerd, President and CEO of HealthPartners and Christine Boese, Vice President of Patient Care at Regions made the presentations with a handful of Ancker graduates in attendance.
