Regions again named one of nation's top 100 heart hospitals
St. Paul hospital is one of only seven in state to receive honor
St. Paul, Minn., - For the second year in a row, Regions Hospital has been named one of the nations top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters. The rankings are based on Thomson's 2008 "Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success Study."
The annual study examined the performance of 970 hospitals across the nation by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and angioplasties. Hospitals were scored in such areas as: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.
"This recognition is a reflection of the incredible team of doctors, nurses and staff at Regions who work together to ensure that our patients get the best care possible," said William Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., department head of cardiovascular services for HealthPartners Medical Group and medical director of Regions Heart Center.
Regions is one of only seven Minnesota hospitals on the list. The 100 Top Hospitals results were published in the Nov. 19 edition of Modern Healthcare magazine. More information on this study and other 100 Top Hospitals research is available at www.100tophospitals.com.
The hospital recently completed an expansion of The Heart Center, nearly doubling the size of the six-year-old location. The hospitals larger expansion project, which will be completed in fall of 2009, includes new inpatient units with private rooms for cardiovascular care patients.
