Regions Hospital dietician offers 10 tips for healthy Valentine's Day
A clinical dietician at Regions Hospital, Sina Postorino, has tips on how to eat healthy foods on Valentine's Day. They include:
- Drink a glass of red wine. In moderation, red wine can be beneficial to your health.
- Choose salmon or another fish. If you must have red meat, eat a smaller portion of beef and choose a meat that is grilled or baked instead of fried.
- Cook with heart-healthy olive oil instead of butter.
- Serve pasta tossed in olive oil or red sauce rather than fattier white sauces.
- Choose from a variety of red fruits and vegetables high in vitamins and minerals, including: red pepper tomatoes and strawberries.
- For dessert, try strawberries dipped in dark chocolate. For chocolate lovers, choose dark chocolate over milk chocolate, the antioxidants can help prevent heart disease.
- Light candles and eat slow to relax and reduce stress.
- Avoid sugar-based candies, such as candy hearts, they have a higher sugar content than chocolate.
- If you are dining out, choose a French bistro which serves portions on smaller plates.
- If you are out for a multiple course meal, skip the appetizer and opt for a salad instead.
