Regions Hospital re-verified as Level I trauma center

Hospital is one of only four in Minnesota to have highest designation

St. Paul, Minn. - Regions Hospital has been re-verified as a Level I trauma center by the American College of Surgeons' (ACS) Committee on Trauma. Level I is the highest possible designation given by the ACS.

"Our specialists are available all day, everyday to take care of any injury that may come through the door," said Dr. Michael McGonigal, medical director, trauma program. "And the same specialty care and expert thinking that guides our trauma care, is provided to every patient in our hospital."

Regions first received Level I verification from the ACS in 1993, and is one of only four Level I trauma centers in Minnesota. The trauma center primarily provides care to patients in the east metro and western Wisconsin, but receives referrals from outside the state as well.

As a Level I trauma center, Regions has specialists in the hospital ready to provide care to trauma patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week including trauma, neuro and orthopedic surgeons, and anesthesiologists. The unique trauma activation system allows the trauma team to assemble and begin preparations for the patient before the patient even arrives.

Trauma injuries can include motor vehicle crashes, burns and falls. Regions trauma center takes care of 3,100 trauma patients annually. Of these, 400 are children.

The ACS verification also meets the requirements for trauma center designation under the

Minnesota state trauma system, which is administered by the Minnesota Department of Health. Beginning July 1, 2009, trauma patients from designated trauma hospitals can only be transferred to other designated trauma hospitals.

The ACS verification and consultation program is designed to assist hospitals in the evaluation and improvement of trauma care. The verification process critically reviews the quality of care at every level - from the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process. The ACS certificate of verification is valid for three years.
