Regions Hospital surgeon performs heart bypass with robot

Regions Hospital performed another successful first with the da Vinci® Surgical System. Goya Raikar, MD, recently completed a Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass (TECAB) the first of its kind in the Midwest. Only a handful of hospitals in the country offer this procedure.

Before robotic surgery, the way to treat patients with heart disease required us to open the chest with a 12 inch incision, said Dr. Raikar, the head of cardiovascular surgery at Regions Hospital. By using da Vinci we were able to use four small incisions to perform beating heart surgical bypass. We think this will greatly reduce body trauma, blood loss, post-operative pain, risk of infection and decrease recovery time in our patients, and has done so with this first surgery and patient.

The da Vinci® surgical robot includes a three-dimensional camera, four robotic arms and surgical instruments that provide range of motion and dexterity exceeding that of a human. The surgeon uses a console to perform an operation through tiny incisions.

Introduced in 2007, the da Vinci® Surgical System is now used for 19 different procedures at Regions. The most common procedures are heart valve repair surgery, hysterectomy and prostate cancer removal. More than 115 patients at Regions have benefited from the robotic surgery technology.
