Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy is one of the main treatment options for cancer. It may be used in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. The most common type of radiation treatment is called external beam radiation therapy. This method uses a machine called a linear accelerator to direct high-energy radiation beams to the exact location of the cancer. Radiation therapy is used for treating certain malignant conditions (cancer), as well as nonmalignant conditions. The high-energy x-rays kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.

Although each patient's course of treatment is different, most receive treatments five days a week, for two to eight weeks, with breaks on the weekends. A radiation oncologist (a specially trained physician), will decide the dosage and type of treatment to be used. Patients who receive external beam radiation therapy are not radioactive during or after treatment. In addition to external beam treatments, the Radiation Therapy Department at Regions Hospital offers other leading-edge treatments including:

3D Conformal Radiation Therapy
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)

Location and Free Parking
The Radiation Therapy Department is located on the second floor of the East Section of Regions Hospital. To make it easier for our patients, free surface lot parking is available (for radiation therapy patients only) directly adjacent to our department.
