Diagnostic Testing

"Even though I'm healthy, my breasts have cysts. I need to be assured my hospital has the most advanced screening devices possible to stay on top of my health."

The key to breast health is a healthy lifestyle combined with consistent breast exams. However, it isn't unusual for women to require additional diagnostic tests. While the vast majority of additional tests find noncancerous results, it is important to follow up on any areas of concern. Regions Hospital Breast Health Center provides the latest, most sophisticated diagnostic tools available, including:

  • Screening mammography: designed to check for changes in the breast and aid in the diagnosis of breast cancer and other conditions.
  • Diagnostic mammography: which looks more closely at an area of concern, such as a lump, nipple discharge or thickening of the nipple, or pain in the breast.
  • Breast ultrasound: which is used to distinguish between a solid lesion that may be cancerous or a fluid-filled noncancerous cyst.
  • Breast MRI: used to investigate suspicious areas in the breast first detected with mammography, physical exam or other imaging exams and is also useful for staging breast cancer, determining treatment and patient follow-up after breast cancer treatment.
  • Ductography: selective injection of radio-opaque material into a breast duct to better evaluate a discharge from the breast.
  • Needle core breast biopsies and fine needle aspirations (stereotactic, MRI, or ultrasound-guided): these more advanced biopsies are accurate, yet noninvasive; many facilities do not have this technology.
  • Needle localization: uses a thin wire to guide a surgeon to an abnormality in the breast.
