Operating roomDoctors who perform operations are called surgeons. They work in bright, airy operating rooms where everything is very clean. Skin graft surgeries are done in the operating room. To keep germs away from patients, the surgeons and nurses wear caps, face masks, rubber gloves and gowns.

Doctors treat serious burns with skin grafts which are patches of healthy skin that are transplanted, or moved, from other areas of the body.

Who helps with surgery?
Surgeon - doctors who perform operations.

Resident surgeon - a doctor who is training to become a surgeon.

Surgery team

Operating room nurse - a nurse who helps with surgery.

Anesthesiologist - a doctor who gives anesthesia. This puts the patient into a kind of sleep, so it won't hurt during surgery.

Anesthetics
anetheticsAn anesthetic is a substance that produces loss of feeling. A general anesthetic does this by making the patient unconscious. Some anesthetics are given by injection into a vein (intravenous injection). Others are given as a gas mixture, which is breathed into the lungs and then absorbed through the lungs into the bloodstream.
