Family Psychoeducation Program

What is the Family Psychoeducation Program?
When someone you care about is in the process of recovery, it can be hard on the whole family. You want to help your family member get better, but you may not know how. Family Psychoeducation is a way you can help your family member get better and make life less stressful for your whole family.

How does it work?
Your family member will meet with a counselor alone for the first meeting. At this meeting, he or she will find out if the program is right for your family. After the first meeting, you will be part of a team made up of your family and a counselor. The team will talk about what is going on, such as hopes for the future, family problems, symptoms, and medication. Your family will attend problem-solving sessions to learn about recovery and ways everyone can support each other. The sessions are available at the HealthPartners Regions Behavioral Health offices in St. Paul and Woodbury.

How can this help my family?
  • You may have better family relationships and general health
  • You will learn about mental illness
  • You will learn new ways to deal with the common problems caused by the illness, such as:
    1. managing symptoms
    2. taking medication
    3. taking part in social activities
Family Psychoeducation will also help in the following ways:
  • Fewer hospital stays
  • Better control over life
  • Fewer symptoms
  • Fewer conflicts about medication
  • More participation in family life and social activities
  • Finding and keeping a job
