January 30, 2006 Regions Hospital surgeon a leader in use and training of specialized knee replacement system Dr. Levy is one of only 12 U.S. physicians chosen to train in England St. Paul, Minn., Jan. 30, 2006 - Bruce Levy, M.D., vice chief of orthopedic surgery at Regions Hospital and an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, was one of 12 U.S. physicians selected to be among the first trained on a specialized knee replacement system called the Oxford Unicompartmental Knee System, or Oxford "Uni" for short. The Oxford "Uni" is the only FDA-approved unicompartmental knee replacement in the U.S. with an artificial meniscal bearing designed to glide freely within the knee. The Oxford "Uni" was developed in Oxford, England, by surgeons who have been using the device for nearly two decades throughout Europe. In fact, more than 16,000 cases have been performed each year outside the U.S. and, since 2004, the Oxford "Uni" has been used at Regions Hospital by Dr. Levy and elsewhere in the U.S. by surgeons trained to perform the specialized procedure. Although there are a number of "Uni" procedures available, the Oxford "Uni," specifically, has the ability to restore near-normal knee function with excellent long-term results because of its free-floating design, according to Dr. Levy. He says, "Patient selection is critical. It is ideal for patients who have arthritis localized to the medial compartment of the knee." Dr. Levy was trained on the "Uni" system in Oxford, England, in 2004. In addition to his clinical practice, he works in a teaching facility and trains orthopedic surgery residents and fellows. Today, Dr. Levy travels North America to teach other surgeons about the Oxford "Uni," its design and specialized technique.
