Gloria Fox Nursing Scholarship Since 1992 Regions nursing department has offered scholarships to employees who are pursuing their associates, bachelor's, or master's degrees in nursing. The scholarship is named after Gloria Fox, a Regions SICU registered nurse who died suddenly. The scholarship has been awarded to more than 50 employees since it was founded. Ryan is a nurse in the Emergency Department. He is in the BSN completion program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Ryan began his nursing career in 1997 as an LPN. After completing his Associate Degree he began working in a coronary intensive care unit and emergency department at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. This is where his devotion to emergency nursing developed. Ryan stated, "I cherish many 'aha' moments with the new graduate nurses I precept on a daily basis. It is through these moments with the dedicated group of nurses that I value my own past nursing experiences and eagerly look forward to my continued bright future of nursing." Elizabeth is a nurse in Labor and Delivery and has been accepted into the Nurse Midwifery program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. In addition to her normal duties in Labor and Delivery, she is a LCCE (Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator), a certified lactation educator, and has been trained as a doula. Elizabeth stated, "I have devoted my professional life to working in prenatal education, where I feel there is a tremendous amount of empowerment as a labor nurse. I am looking forward to an opportunity to provide primary care to women, especially through the journey of pregnancy and birth." Tricia is a nurse on the Burn Center. She is in the BSN completion program at University of Phoenix. When Tricia was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming a doctor. She wore a stethoscope around the house and pretended to administer shots and medications to her dolls. Being hospitalized in the past and seeing things from the patients point of view made her fall in love with the nursing staff. The nurses were always there and helped when she was sick. After this, she discovered that she really wanted to become a nurse. Regarding her education Tricia stated, "This is my dream and it is imperative that I complete it." Marie is a Nurse on 7 South, Coronary Intensive Care Unit. She is pursuing her Masters in Nursing with an education concentration at Bethel University. Marie fell in love with teaching and learning while home schooling her two sons. "There is no more certain way to truly understand information than to teach it to someone else," she said. This concept combined with her love of nursing, and the shortage of both nurses and nursing faculty led Marie in the direction of nursing education. Wendy is a PCA on 7 East MICU pursuing her Associate Degree in Nursing at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. Her journey to become a nurse has involved preparation, perseverance and establishing goals. Wendy stated, "Ever since I was younger, I have enjoyed helping others and because of that satisfaction I have chosen a career in nursing. I have always been a people person, but I never knew the capacity of compassion I hold within myself for people of any age suffering from any possible condition." Sister Perpetua is a PCA on 5 West who is pursuing a nursing degree from Inver Hills Community College. Sister Perpetua belongs to the order of Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Asumbi Kenya, East Africa. She was chosen to come to the United States from Kenya to have the opportunity to study and receive a nursing degree. Sister Perpetua stated, "To me, nursing is more than a career; it is a call to bring compassionate care, love, and healing to the sick through total commitment and dedication. I can work and serve the sick anywhere in the world." Stephen is a PCA on 6 West studying nursing at Inver Hills Community College. Going from a corporate executive to a student nurse, Stephen is often asked, "How did you ever decide to become a nurse?" He says, "I climbed the corporate ladder and decided I didnt like the view. As I look back on my life and career, both the good and the bad, I can see that it has all been leading up to this. At the end of this year, I will have completed nursing school to begin a career as an RN. Nursing will allow me to use many of the skills I have developed through the years." |
