Visiting Chinese Physicians Complete International Health Leadership Program at Regions Hospital
Group is first to participate in program

St. Paul, Minn – Nine physicians from Chongqing, China who are participating in the first International Health Leadership Program (IHLP) at Regions Hospital will be honored at a recognition dinner tonight at the University Club in St. Paul. The physicians were selected by Chinese government because they are experts in their fields and will be able to implement the practices and procedures theyve learned at Regions.

The program is a joint effort between Regions Hospital, HealthPartners Institute for Medical Education and the Bureau of Health for the City of Chongqing and is aimed at improving health care for those living in China.

"The Chinese physicians want to understand how our health care system works so that they can efficiently provide health care to more than one billion people," said Hemlal Kafle, IHLP program coordinator.

The physicians attended lectures and had the opportunity to shadow and conduct research with a mentor.

"The lectures on evidence-based medical care were very interesting," said Dr. Jiying, professor and chief physician at the Department of Neurology, at the First Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing University of Medical Sciences. "It is a better standard of care, but it is tricky because the framework of rules and regulations is different here than in China."

The nine visiting physicians first arrived in the Twin Cities in May, 2008 for the 18-week program.
