Lymphedema Appearing as swelling of a body part, lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the tissues. While primary lymphedema is unrelated to any other known condition, secondary lymphedema usually occurs among people who have had lymph node surgery or radiation. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, the swelling can be reduced and managed through a therapy program of massage, manual lymph drainage, compression (through bandages and garments), exercises and skin care education. this therapy program will be established and modified by a certified lymphedema therapist. For more information about this program, please call the Regions Hospital Physicial Therapy Clinic at 651-254-2071, the Regions Hospital Breast Health Center at 651-254-4600 or HealthPartners Specialty Center - Physical Therapy at 651-254-7700. |
