 | What is the Ophthalmic Medical Technologist Program?
The program combines highly qualified faculty with modern facilities, equipped with the latest technology, to provide a broad experience for students. Lectures, group discussions, seminars, field trips and supervised clinical work provide a comprehensive experience in ophthalmic medical technology. Growth and improvement of clinical skills progress under the supervision of certified ophthalmic medical personnel, physicians and other members of the health care team. The small class size of up to nine students permits a close faculty-student relationship, vastly different from most colleges and universities.
The first year is nine months in duration. The curriculum includes:
- Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Medical Terminology
- Ophthalmic Optics
- Survey of Eye Disease
- Ophthalmic Photography
- Microbiology
- Ocular Motility
- Contact Lenses
- Aseptic Technique and Surgical Assisting
- Ophthalmic Pharmacology
In addition, courses and hands-on workshops are scheduled which cover a broad spectrum of tests that are routinely performed by ophthalmic medical personnel.
The second year is a twelve-month, full-time externship. Emphasis during this phase of training is on the clinical application of previously attained knowledge and skills. Supervised clinical training is conducted in the eye clinics of HealthPartners Clinics and Hennepin County Medical Center as well as in private ophthalmology practices in the Twin Cities area. Additional lectures and seminars are scheduled during the second year of training.
