Regions Named Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace By State's Hospital Association
St. Paul, Minn., Regions Hospital has been named the Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace for 2004 by the Minnesota Hospital Association at an awards banquet on Friday, Jan. 14. Regions won the large hospital category.

The association's annual awards program recognizes excellence in Minnesota hospital programs, partners, caregivers, volunteers, trustees and staff. According to the MHA, the Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace Award is designed to honor hospitals that "go the extra mile" in enhancing employee satisfaction and showing how improvements that have been made benefit employees work satisfaction.

The MHA recognized Regions promotion of "a healthy workplace that helps employees feel positive about their jobs." The award specifically recognizes Regions' self-designed "Healthy Workplace" program, which comprises employee recognition, leadership programs, education and social activities. Regions, in conjunction with AFSCME MN Council 5, developed the program in 2002 with input from all levels of the organization.

"Healthy Workplace is proof that employers and unions can work together to change the culture of a work environment," said Nola Lynch, a Regions union representative and Healthy Workplace committee member. "Healthy Workplace has been a win-win for all parties involved, especially the employees. I'm proud to be part of it."

For the award, Regions had to demonstrate its retention strategy by showing creativity, scope and implementation. Regions has seen a significant decline in turnover since 2002.

"Healthy Workplace is intentionally creating a culture that works well. We're at the beginning of our journey," said Dave Graebner, a Regions vice president and Healthy Workplace co-chair. "Talking about positive and negative behaviors helps us raise the bar within the hospital to provide the best care and best experience to each patient and his or her family. A culture that works well translates into a safer place for patients."

The Minnesota Hospital Association is a trade association representing Minnesotas hospitals and health systems.
