Nationwide research study for Generalized Anxiety Disorder taking place at Regions Hospital
Study participants sought from Twin Cities, surrounding areas
Psychiatrist available to discuss disorder

ST. PAUL, MINN., Regions Hospital is one of more than 40 sites in the U.S. participating in a medication research study for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) in adults ages 18 to 64.

GAD is a disorder in which people experience persistent and excessive worry and feel tension about events and activities in their lives. This worry and tension is often out of proportion to the outcomes of these events and activities. Affecting four million Americans, GAD is diagnosed after people's worries and tensions have persisted for at least six months.

"Anxiety can be a very disabling illness," says Elizabeth Reeve, M.D., psychiatrist at Regions Hospital. "Treatment has the potential to really change people's lives."

GAD sufferers often experience physical symptoms that manifest from anxiety. Among the symptoms may be restlessness, fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, nausea, insomnia and trouble concentrating.

The research study at Regions will provide volunteer participants study-related medical care including health assessments, lab tests and study medication at no cost. GAD, which may be the result of chemical imbalance or other dysfunction in the brain, is treated in multiple ways including medications, psychotherapy and sometimes both. A medication's effectiveness must be evaluated through clinical research before it can be prescribed by a physician. In research studies, volunteers are given the investigational medication. Study personnel monitor the results.

Regions Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center and teaching hospital serving Minnesota and western Wisconsin for more than 130 years.
