Regions Hospital Foundation Announces Circle of Community Honorees
St. Paul, Minn., -- Regions Hospital Foundation recently honored one individual, one physician and one corporation for their philanthropic giving to Regions Hospital in the areas of patient care, medical education and research.
The 2005 individual honoree named is Mary Brainerd, president and chief executive officer for HealthPartners and a family of nonprofit health care organizations that includes Regions Hospital. Brainerd has been a leader in health care since 1984. She is involved and supportive of initiatives focusing on patient safety and patient-centered health care systems and programs.
Brainerd provides significant support to Regions Hospital Foundation. She and her husband, Dick, set an example through personal contributions, and she encourages her leadership team and all employees of HealthPartners to contribute. She is responsible for HealthPartners matching dollar for dollar all funds raised through the annual Sharing at Work Employee Giving Campaign, which this year exceeded $400,000.
Brainerd holds a Master's Degree in business administration from the University of St. Thomas and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota. Brainerd was recognized as one of the top 25 women in health care by Modern Healthcare in April 2005 and, most recently, received the Jean Harris Award from the Women's Health Leadership Trust.
Dr. J. Daniel Nelson was named the 2005 physician honoree. Dr. Nelson is an associate medical director with HealthPartners Medical Group and Clinics, and is responsible for medical and surgical specialties. He has been involved in the leadership of the medical group since 1995, where his responsibilities include medical liability insurance coverage, medical group finance and compliance. He is a practicing ophthalmologist and served as the ophthalmology department head at Regions and Ramsey Clinic for 12 years. He is also a professor in the Ophthalmology Department at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Nelson's leadership also involves the Sharing at Work Employee Giving Campaign, which benefited from his direction and personal challenge in 2002 and 2003 when he served as co-chair and led the committee to significant revenue growth, raising more than $500,000.
Dr. Nelson graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry. He completed his Medical Doctorate, Ophthalmology Residency and Corneal/Anterior Segment Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.
Jim Humphrey received the 2005 corporate honoree award on behalf of Andersen Corporation, a privately owned business founded in 1903 by Danish immigrant Hans Andersen and his family in Hudson, Wis. Today, Andersen Corporation is an international enterprise employing more than 9,000 people at 20 locations with headquarters in Bayport, Minn., a 2.8 million-square-foot facility that covers 65 acres. Andersen annually manufactures more than six million wood windows and doors, with sales worldwide.
Andersen Corporation has had an active role in the community, supporting organizations and programs that improve the welfare of people living in the communities where employees live and work. Andersen Corporation, The Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation, The Bayport Foundation of Andersen Corporation and the Hugh J. Andersen Foundation have been generous donors to Regions Hospital. The Emergency Department, the Cancer Care Center and the HIV Clinic have particularly benefited from their generosity.
Humphrey, president and chief executive officer of Andersen Corporation and a Board Member of Regions Hospital Foundation, has been instrumental in helping secure support for Regions from Andersen Corporation. Humphrey, who has a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Millikin University, joined Andersen in April 1999.
