  | Critical Care Immersion Program
Sound research has shown that new graduate nurses benefit from a focused orientation. Regions Hospital has developed an orientation program for new nurses who have a passion to become a critical care nurse. Our Critical Care Immersion Program is an 18-month on-boarding and learning experience for new registered nurses who hold a BSN or BAN. Associate Degree nurses with a bachelors degree in a health related field are also encouraged to apply. Critical Care Immersion cohorts will be hired twice a year into the program.
Initially, the nurses are oriented and work on various progressive care/telemetry units. This provides initial opportunities to learn time management, documentation, prioritization and assessment of multiple patients. This will better prepare these new nurses to integrate into critical care where they will deal with the additional challenges of managing and caring for extremely ill or injured patients. While they are working in progressive care, they will also have opportunities to "shadow" on the critical care units to help them decide which area of critical care they are most interested in. During their extended orientation, they have regular cohort support meetings and the dedicated program coordinators, preceptors and nurse managers are available resources for any issues that might arise.
After spending several weeks in progressive care, the new grads will begin critical care orientation (called Phase III) followed by independent assignment on a critical care unit (Phase IV). While the program is customized for each nurse, the goal is to help each one reach Phase IV within 12 months of hire.
Jessie, RN, and Lindsey, RN, began working in the Critical Care Immersion Program in July 2006. They are now working in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
