Mergitu, RN, received her bachelor's degree in nursing in Ethiopia.
MergituMergitu joined the nursing staff at Regions Hospital in July 2004. Everything about healthcare is different here, she said. In Ethiopia, government hospitals offer only basic services and supplies are minimal. Nurses work without clean gloves, IV pumps or computers. Community education focuses on birth control and immunizations. In America, everything you need is available, she said.

Mergitu describes working at Regions as challenging, rewarding and educational. She credits the excellent preceptors for building her confidence and competence during the orientation process. They were so patient and understanding. I truly appreciate and thank them for all their guidance, she said. Setting even higher goals for herself, Mergitu plans to pursue a career in midwifery.

Nelia, RN, begain working at Regions in December 2005.
NeliaOriginally from the Philippines where she received her nursing education, Nelia has a great appreciation for the abundance and opportunity available in the United States. Conditions at the provincial hospital in the Philippines where she worked were often poor. Gloves and needles were washed and re-used. Modern equipment was scarce and computers were nonexistent. Nursing jobs were difficult to find, and career advancement was merely a dream.

As a Regions nurse, Nelia is proud to be a team member in a state-of-the-art hospital. There is such a wealth of diversity here, she says. Whether cultural, religious, or social acceptance is key, and not just for employees. Every patient at Regions receives equity of care. Those who need more, get more. No one is left hanging.

Nelia is grateful for the opportunities available at Regions and encourages nurses interested in improving their own life and the lives of others to apply. Diversity is not only respected at Regions, it is welcomed, she said.
