Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

The nursing staff on this unit care for acutely ill teenagers (16 and older), and adult and geriatric patients with respiratory failure, renal failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, metabolic disorders and multi-system problems. Nurses are part of a team that provides interventional care to patients including invasive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, titration of vaso-active drugs, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, balloon tamponade usage for variceal bleeding and therapeutic prone positioning. Nurses on this floor are also trained to perform ultra filtration for patients in acute renal failure. Core groups of nurses are also trained in therapeutic hypothermia for post cardiac-arrest patients. This 12-bed unit also receives overflow patients from the CICU and SICU.
