Renal and Progressive Care (6 South)

Nurses on this renal and medical progressive care unit work with acutely or chronically ill adult and geriatric patients. Many patients on this unit receive hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis; thus nurses work closely with the Regions dialysis department. In addition, nurses on this unit may care for patients who require more attentive nursing than one would receive on a general care unit because of complex medical conditions, such as those on chronic ventilators. Patients on this unit may also be diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis or drug overdose. The unit has 11 beds, seven of which are telemetry beds.

The renal and progressive care unit does hire new grad nurses, and all nurses are required to attend progressive care classes and ECG training. Nurses are strongly encouraged to complete ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) training. Some nurses on this unit pursue their progressive care certification.
