 | Surgery (6 West)
This is a 21-bed patient care unit whose nurses deliver care to acutely ill adult and geriatric patients. Typically, patients on this unit have undergone general surgical procedures such as abdominal, chest and thyroid surgeries. Nurses on the unit focus on post-operative care including pain management and prevention of secondary conditions such as pneumonia, infections or blood clots. There tends to be higher acuity on this unit because many patients have complex medical conditions, from vascular issues to amputations and ostomies. Nurses on this unit are trained to provide complex wound care and provide wound care education to their patients to ensure a continued successful recovery once they leave the hospital. Nurses agree there is a great team effort among nursing staff and the variety of physician groups that see patients on this surgical unit (general surgery, TACs, ENT, vascular, oncology, medicine, podiatry, etc.).
A number of nurses on the unit have already received their medical/surgical certification, and others are encouraged to seek this certification.
