Prevention
With the knowledge of how certain cancers develop, we are able to provide information on which lifestyle habits influence your risk of developing certain forms of cancer. Dietary choices, tobacco use, sun exposure and exposure to environmental carcinogens may contribute to an increased risk of cancer. The
American Cancer Society
can provide you with information on healthy habits that can reduce your risk of developing cancer.
Genetics Counseling
Often, the earlier cancer is detected, the better the success rates are for treatment. If your family has a history of cancer, you too may be at risk. Approximately 5-10% of all cancers are due to a hereditary factor. Our cancer genetics counselor helps identify individuals with hereditary cancer risk. This service may be especially helpful for families with:
- Cancer before age 50
- Individuals with more than primary cancer
- Several realtives with the same type of cancer
- Relatives with known hereditary cancer
Appointments with our cancer genetics counselor can be made to discuss hereditary cancer, genetic testing options, cancer surveillance guidelines and risk reduction. Referrals from your primary care physician are preferred. For more information, please call 651-254-3572.
