Face Masks

FacemaskSnug fitting compression garments can reduce scarring from burns by keeping the tissue flat and smooth during the healing process. This is called compression therapy. Compression gaments are made to fit the injured areas and are often colored light brown to mimic natural skin tones so they are less noticeable. One example of compression therapy is a face mask. Fabric masks for facial burns, however, are very noticeable, difficult to conceal and do not maintain adequate pressure on the natural curves of the face.

Responding to the need for a better type of face mask, our Burn Center developed the first clear plastic mask in 1975. The mask is much less visible than a fabric mask and effectively maintains pressure on the face during healing. Because it is transparent, therapists can see how well the mask is compressing the scars. As a result, the plastic mask is significantly more effective in reducing scarring following a burn injury. The technique is used internationally in the treatment of facial burns.
