New Grad Experience

On my first day I was eager - but nervous - about taping report at change of shift. I wanted to do such a good job and make a great first impression. Well, I was so nervous that I forgot to push record! As you might imagine, I havent made that mistake again. Jenny6S
Jenny started as a new grad on 6S, our intermediate care unit.

Jenny, a new nursing graduate, describes her experience so far at Regions as exciting, rewarding and challenging.

She started on 6South in July of 2007 after completing her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Nursing is a second career for Jenny, who is from Blaine, Minnesota. She worked in a Microbiology lab before changing professions.

Below, Jenny shares her thoughts on a number of issues faced by new nursing graduates.

Q: What drew you to the nursing profession?
It sounds clich but Ive always been really interested in caring for people and helping those in need. I was also attracted to the profession because there are so many opportunities in the field. You could be a floor nurse, a clinical nurse, a nurse manager the opportunities are endless. Finally, the profession requires a lot of teamwork, yet, at the same time, a lot of independent thinking. Its a perfect fit for my personality.
Q: What are some challenges you have faced as a new grad?
Well, working with people is really rewarding, but its also extremely draining. The stress level is greater than I anticipated but Im learning quickly to prioritize and manage my time so that I can successfully juggle everything during a shift. Everyday I gain more and more confidence as I strive for perfection with my patients.
Q: How has Regions helped you feel confident and welcomed as new grad?
Ive hardly ever had to ask for help or support. Thats whats really great. The orientation was extremely in-depth and the other nurses and my nurse manager are always offering help and checking in with me. Regions has really made me feel like a part of the team.
Q: What advice would you offer to a new grad?
The best advice I can give is dont be afraid to ask questions and ask them often! Everyone here is more than willing to help. Also, find a mentor. Look for nurses you respect and try to incorporate their techniques into your work. I know this has helped me improve my nursing skills.
Q: What has been your most memorable experience so far?
Thats hard to say. I think its the realization that I have so much to learn about healthcare and about people. Everyday is something new. You just never know what to expect.
Q: What was most memorable about your first day on the floor as a nurse?
How overwhelmed I felt. I seriously wondered: Am I ever going to be able to do this? At the same time, I remember feeling that this was the right place and the right career for me.
