  | Same Day Surgery at Regions Hospital
What is Same Day Surgery?
Same day Surgery enables you to be admitted to the hospital, have surgery or diagnostic procedures performed and return home the same day.
What is an A.M. Admission?
If you have an A.M. admission, you will be admitted to the hospital the morning of your surgery and remain there. The length of time you'll be hospitalized depends on the type of surgery you have and your doctor's evaluation of your recovery.
Will Insurance Cover My Surgery?
Most insurance or health plan policies cover same day surgery procedures. Check with your insurance representative with questions about your coverage.
How Do I Prepare For Surgery?
Your doctor will schedule the time, date and procedure. A nurse will call you the day before your appointment to confirm the time of your surgery.
If you have any questions about the surgical procedure you are having done, be sure to ask your doctor. We want you to be informed about your procedure and ask questions if you don't understand.
If a change in your physical condition occurs (such as cold, fever or an important change in the condition for which you are having surgery), contact your surgeon's clinic. If you are unable to reach the clinic, please contact the Regions Hospital Surgery Center at (651) 254-4000. This phone is answered 24 hours a day. The operating room nurse will notify your doctor of your changed condition.
Do:
Take medications as directed,
but only with a sip of water. This includes heart pills, blood pressure, asthma and epilepsy medications. However,
do not
take aspirin, Ibuprofen or other medicines that contain aspirin for one week prior to your surgery.
If you wear
contact lenses or eyeglasses,
please bring the case.
Bring your insurance or health plan identification cards
with you when you come to the hospital.
You may want to bring a small amount of cash for medications and parking.
A nurse will provide you with
special instructions for infants and children
scheduled for surgery. Children are encouraged to bring a favorite toy or blanket.
Before surgery, you will be asked if you have an advance directive. An advance directive can be an oral conversation between you and your health care provider, or a written document in which you state your choices for meidcal treatmentand/or designate who will make your treatment choices should you lose decision-making capability. A living will is an example of an advance directive. If you have a written directive, please bring a copy with you.
Do Not:
Do not eat or drink anything
(including water) after midnight before your surgery. Avoiding all liquids and/or food (including chewing gum) is very important. Unless your stomach is completely empty, you may vomit during surgery, which could become a very serious complication. If there is food or liquid in your stomach, your surgery will be canceled. Special instructions for infants or children can be provided by a nurse from Same-Day Surgery by calling (651) 254-0022.
Do not smoke
after midnight before your surgery. Recovery may be easier if coughing and related smoking irritations are minimized.
Do not wear any makeup,
especially eye makeup when you come to the hospital. Injury to the cornea may result from mascara flakes that can get into the eye.
Do not wear nail polish
when you come to the hospital. In most cases, your nails are monitored to identify proper blood and oxygen circulation during surgery.
Do not
bring credit cards, jewelry or large amounts of money.
Do not drive after surgery.
You may not drive, under any circumstances, for at least 24 hours after surgery. Please arrange to have a responsible party drive you home, assist you inside and stay with you during the first 24 hours of your recovery.
What Happens Before Surgery?
A nurse from Same Day Surgery will contact you the day before surgery to verify your appointment time and answer any questions. If you know you will be unavailable at that time, please call Same Day Surgery at (651) 254-0022 between 1:30-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to confirm your surgery time.
Once you arrive at the Surgery reception area, your nurse and anesthesiologist will meet with you to review your medical history, assess your physical condition and determine the type of anesthesia best suited for you.
Although unlikely, there are a few instances which require same-day surgery patients to be admitted to the hospital. Just in case, you may want to make tentative arrangements for child care, pets, etc.
Your family may wait for you in the surgery waiting area. Your doctor will meet with them after surgery to discuss your condition.
What Happens After Surgery?
Following surgery, you will be taken to the postanthesia care area. If you are an A.M. Admission patient, you will be taken from there to your hospital room.
Your nurse and anesthesiologist will determine when you are ready to be discharged. Be sure a staff member is with you when you first walk or stand in case you become dizzy. The anesthetic used during surgery may slow your reactions.
A nurse from Surgery Center will give you instructions for home care and answer your questions. You will be provided with written instructions that list telephone numbers and names of staff and how they can be reached if you have any questions or difficulties once you return home.
Do:
Rest and take it easy
for at least 12 hours after surgery.
Eat lightly
to avoid nausea or vomiting. You can usually eat as you wish or as instructed by the nurse about 12 hours after surgery.
Do Not:
Do not, under any circumstances, drive
for at least 24 hours after surgery.
Do not drink any alcoholic beverages
for at least 24 hours after surgery.
