Regions Hospital expansion reaches halfway mark
11-story addition is one of largest construction projects in Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Regions Hospital today announced that it has reached the halfway mark of its 11-story expansion project. The project, which began in November 2006, is scheduled to be completed in October 2009, when three of the six new patient care units open. The emergency department phase of the project opens a few months earlier in July 2009.

Construction remains on time even with the hospitals board of director's approval in January of an 11th floor. The additional floor translates into 36 beds more beds, bringing the total capacity in the expansion to 216 private rooms when completed. The expansion does not add additional beds to the hospitals licensed limit of 427, but rather makes a higher percentage of patient rooms private.

The $179 million project also includes:
- An expanded and upgraded emergency center with 45 beds and nearly twice the space available today
- 20 new operating rooms
- Two levels of underground parking to accommodate 400 vehicles

According to general contractor Kraus-Andersen Construction, the next project milestone will occur sometime in mid-June when crews finish pouring concrete for the super structure and reach the highest point of the 11-story building - some 31 feet higher than the highest point of the existing structure.
