If your child's home is safe you won't have to say "no" so often. You won't have to worry so much about what trouble she may find.
Here are some things you can do to make your home safer:
- No small pieces, sharp points or lead paint on toys
- No cigarettes or alcohol where your child can reach
- Do not allow smoking in your home
- Cover all electric outlets
- Put safety latches on cupboard and cabinet doors
- Cover corners on furniture so baby won't get hurt when she falls or bumps into them
- Put all poisons up high so baby can't reach. Examples: laundry soap, bleach, medicine, makeup, paint, household cleaners
- If you live in an older home test for lead paint
- Lower crib matress so baby can't climb out
- Do not store anything in crib, only baby and her blankets allowed
- Put gates at bottom and top of stairs
- Nothing small on the floor! Watch for things like safety pins, marbles, rubber bands, legos, pens and other small things
- You should have Syrup of Ipecac available in case baby eats or drinks something poison. Always call your doctor before giving Syrup of Ipecac.
