Swallowing Disorders

Swallowing disorders affect people of all ages with all types of disabilites and illnesses. The problem occurs very often in the elderly but can also occur with:

  • pharyngeal or laryngeal cancer
  • stroke
  • brain trauma
  • post-surgical buildup of scar tissue
  • neck problems, osteoporosis
  • polio
  • cerebral palsy
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
A precise diagnosis and an individualized treatment program can ease discomfort and promote better eating habits and general health. If left untreated, a person may be at risk for malnutrition and pneumonia, which may be life-threatening.

Our speech therapists specialize in diagnosing and treating these disorders. Depending on the type of problem and the location of the difficulty,

  • A person can be taught specific techniques to give better control over swallowing or to stimulate the swallow reflex
  • Foods of a different consistency may be suggested
  • Surgery may be recommended to remove scar tissue caused by a previous surgical procedure or an injury
  • In severe cases, intravenous feeding may be recommended
If you think you may benefit from this program, consult your physician. (A referral from your physician is necessary for the evaluation and treatment.)
