Pool Therapy Regions Hospital's therapeutic pool is located on the first floor of the North Section. It is a warm water (93 degrees) therapeutic pool. The depth goes from 2 feet to 5 1/2 feet, and can be entered from either steps or a ramp. The ramp is wheelchair accessible with our pool wheelchairs. Our pool is used primarily for outpatient therapy and hospital patients, with other times set up for classes and open pool aftercare. Why would pool therapy be good for me? A doctor may recommend pool therapy for you because of its many benefits. Water is an ideal medium in which to start a gentle exercise program, progressing to more rigorous exercise as tolerated. The pool provides a safe environment to work on walking and balance, since it both supports you and challenges you in standing activities. The unique properties of water also help decrease pain and improve muscle relaxation, strength and flexibility. Do I need to know how to swim? You do not have to know how to swim to participate in pool therapy. Our pool is not designed for lap swimming and we specialize in treating non-swimmers. At your first visit, your therapist will orient you to the pool, discuss your comfort level in the pool and set up your exercise program accordingly. You will not be expected to do anything in the water that makes you feel uncomfortable. Each session is about 30 minutes and a therapist will be with you during that time. For more information about this program, please call the Regions Hospital therapy pool at (651) 254-4797. |
