Brain Injury A brain injury is another name for a concussion. It is often caused by a blow to the head or a sudden, violent motion that causes the brain to bump up against the skull. This movement may bruise the brain and cause a person to pass out, but damage can occur even without this brief loss of consciousness. Bruising that occurs is very tiny and cannot always be seen on x-rays or a CT scan. The doctors know it is there because of the symptoms, such as: loss of memory about the incident, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea or vomiting, confusion, fatigue, mood changes, irritability or trouble following directions. Most people have a good recovery after this type of injury. A few however have symptoms that continue for days, weeks or months after the injury. They may have problems with headaches, dizziness, blurring or double vision as well as trouble with learning and memory, attention, concentration, slower thinking and physical or mental fatigue. They may also notice be more irritable or more emotional. Our rehabilitation physicians and therapists are experts in helping people recover from mild brain injuries.
