Ancker School of Nursing memorial scholarship
As part of the 2008 all-class reunion, the Ancker School of Nursing Memorial Scholarship was created with gifts from alumni of nearly $10,000. Then this spring, an Ancker alumna and her husband gave $17,000 for a fund that will support scholarships into the future! (A minimum of $25,000 is required for an endowment fund.) Each year, interest from the fund will be given as scholarships in the name of the Ancker School of Nursing.
This past winter, the scholarship was created for applicants who meet the following criteria:
- A current Regions Hospital employee
- A current RN who is in a bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. program with a nursing/health focus
- A nurse who is planning to continue his/her employment with Regions in the future. (Preferred, not required).
Because there is already a scholarship at Regions for new or lower-level health care employees, the criteria is for those who will be future teachers and managers, as well as hands-on caregivers.
First scholarships awarded
In April 2009, the first scholarship awards of $600 each were made in honor of the Ancker School of Nursing. Mercy Paul, RN and Jackie Chute, RN were selected by a committee of Ancker graduates including Mary Newton '61, Anna Fuhrmann '62, Fran Reiser '60 and Regions Hospital employees Cathy McCallister, RN and Keevan Kosidowski.
On May 11, 2009, the scholarships were given during a breakfast hosted by the Foundation and Nursing Administration. Mary Brainerd, President and CEO of HealthPartners and Christine Boese, Vice President of Patient Care at Regions made the presentations with a handful of Ancker graduates in attendance.
Let us introduce you to the first Ancker School of Nursing Memorial Scholarship recipients.
Mercy Paul, RN is a clinical documentation specialist at Regions Hospital and is pursuing her MSN in Nursing through the University of Phoenix. Her early life experience living in India and visiting one of Mother Teresa’s clinics for lepers sparked the passion to help others and provide comfort to the suffering. Mercy has applied her nursing skills in the nursing home, medical/ surgical, telemetry and intensive care settings.
Jackie Chute, RN is a staff nurse in the Regions Emergency Center and is attending Minnesota State University–Mankato to become a family nurse practitioner. Jackie is involved at Regions through the Equitable Care Team, the Unit Practice Council and the Quality Improvement Committee. Jackie volunteers at her parish, helps her friends with fundraising for medical mission trips and shares her nursing skills to support local events such as the Twin Cities Marathon and the Republican National Convention.
