Heart Center
A full spectrum of care
At the Heart Center, we want to keep you and your heart healthy and strong. It all starts with learning the risk factors and how to control them, so you can avoid heart problems in the first place. If you or a loved one has a heart attack or heart problem, you’re in good hands at Regions. Our cardiologists and surgeons are among the best at giving immediate care. And once you’re on the way to recovery, we have cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention programs to help make sure you stay healthy and avoid future heart problems.

Common conditions
These are some of the most common heart conditions we treat at Regions:
Coronary artery disease – narrowing of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. This is usually caused by build-up of fatty and cholesterol deposits called plaques.
Congestive heart failure – happens when the heart can’t pump enough blood for the body. This may be caused by weakening of the heart muscle, problems with the heart’s valves or something else. It can also happen with normal pumping function.
Angina – chest pain or discomfort due to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle caused by narrowing or blockages of the heart arteries.
High blood pressure/high cholesterol – Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of the arteries. High blood pressure is typically more than 140/90. Over time, high cholesterol causes fatty deposits to develop in blood vessels. Both high blood pressure and high cholesterol increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)/heart murmur – An irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) is a change from a normal heart rhythm. A heart murmur is an abnormal heart sound made by turbulent blood flow in or near the heart.
Chest pain/heart attack – A heart attack is damage or death of heart muscle. This typically occurs when a blood clot and/or cholesterol build-up blocks blood flow through a coronary artery. Chest pain is a common symptom during a heart attack .
Genetic predisposition – A family history of heart disease may place you at a greater risk for developing heart disease.
Valve disease – Heart valve disease occurs when a valve either does not open properly due to narrowing (stenosis) or does not close properly causing a leak (regurgitation). This may disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart.

Interventional cardiologist – a cardiologist who performs angioplasties, implants stents and does structural procedures like closing atrial septal defects.
Electrophysiologist – a cardiologist who diagnoses and treats arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat). This may include slow heart rates, atrial fibrillation or ventricular arrhythmias. They may recommend medicines, perform procedures like ablation, or use pacemakers or defibrillators.
