A hospital campaign takes aim at the stigma of mental illnesses
By Michael Trangle, MD
Mental illnesses are diseases that can be treated and often times cured, but nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek help from a health professional.
In Minnesota, one in five people experience mental illness directly and countless others feel the effects. Regions Hospital is set to break ground on a new state-of-the-art, inpatient mental health facility.
Regions Hospital officials plan to spend $36 million on a mental health building at the hospital’s downtown St. Paul campus.
Mental health affects everyone from every walk of life. About one in four adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year.

Our stories
Thirteen years ago, I was awakened by a 2 a.m. phone call from my 21-year-old son, Matt. He was away at college in another state but dropped out when he became depressed. Now, he was clearly delusional.
For many in our community, family support is not available and services for mental illness are hit or miss. The new building is a $36 million statement that HealthPartners cares deeply about mental health.
Lisa Smith is a mother of two teenage boys, a nurse at a Twin Cities hospital and an avid runner. She’s also a survivor. After struggling with depression for many years, Lisa finally got the help she needed at Regions Hospital.
During a recent visit to Minnesota, Patrick Kennedy paid a visit to Regions Hospital’s new mental health facility that is in its final stages of construction. Kennedy is a former U.S. Representative for Rhode Island and the son of the late U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy.
