Neurosurgery
The best tools in the most skilled hands
Neurosurgery involves the brain, spine and other parts of the nervous system. Just a few of the reasons you or a loved one might see us include spinal cord injuries, spine conditions, brain injuries, aneurysms, and tumors of the brain and spine. We also treat movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.
No matter what brings you here, our goal is to help you achieve a healthy life. Many non-surgical treatments are available. But, if surgery is your best option, our neurosurgeons have years of specialized training, plus the latest technology and best medical tools. You’ll always receive the highest level of care.

Your team
Our nationally-recognized neurosurgery team often participates in local, national and international conferences, where they speak about the latest advances and techniques for quality care. Your team may include these specialists.
Neurosurgeon – surgeon trained in surgery on the brain, spine, and other parts of the nervous system. Skilled in the most advanced treatments including minimally invasive neurosurgery.
Neurologist – physician trained in evaluating and treating brain and nervous system conditions.
Rehabilitation specialists – may include physicians, nurses, psychologists, dieticians and therapists (aquatic, occupational, physical, recreational, and/or speech therapists). These specialists are trained and dedicated to helping you regain your independence. They work with you to develop a treatment program to help you with the physical, cognitive, or emotional difficulties after a major illness or injury.
Advanced practice provider (APP) – a health care professional with a master’s or doctoral degree. Includes physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs). Works under the supervision of a doctor in both clinic and operating room.
Nurse clinician (RN) – a nurse who has completed studies in a specific area of nursing. RNs work with partners across service areas to make sure a patient’s care plan is well-coordinated and carried out successfully.

Services
The following procedures are commonly performed by our neurosurgeons:
General neurosurgery
Neurosurgery is a broad term including a variety of surgical procedures and treatments related to the brain, the spine, and other parts of the nervous system. Our neurosurgeons specialize in all phases of neurological surgery for the brain, spine, and nerve-related injuries and diseases.
Spine surgery
If surgery is recommended, you’ll be in excellent hands. Our world-class team is skilled in all types of spine surgery from minimally invasive procedures to complex surgeries. You may be referred for spine surgery if you have one of these conditions:
- Cervical disc disease/rupture
- Spinal deformity
- Scoliosis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Disc rupture
- Spine and spinal cord injury
- Spinal stenosis
- Spinal cord tumor
- Vertebral compression fracture
Neurotrauma
Neurotrauma includes serious injuries to the brain or spinal cord. These types of injuries can be extremely complex. Our gifted neurosurgeons and specialized teams have the skill, experience, and compassion to give you the highest level of care.
Skull-base surgery
Skull-base surgery includes benign and malignant tumors, infections, birth defects and injuries caused by severe head trauma. Skull-base diseases can affect the senses as well as movement. Because of the concentration of nerves and arteries at the base of the skull, treatment is complex.
Frameless stereotactic surgery
Stereotactic surgery uses images to guide the surgeon to a specific area of the brain. In frameless stereotactic surgery, imaging markers are attached to the patient’s scalp to create a computer image showing the surgeon how best to approach a specific area of the brain. This procedure is often used during the removal of large brain tumors.
Deep brain stimulation
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used to treat movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and essential tremor. During surgery, the neurosurgeon implants a battery-operated neurostimulator. Similar to a heart pacemaker, it delivers electrical stimulation to a specific area of the brain that controls movement. This stimulation blocks abnormal nerve signals that cause symptoms of Parkinson’s disease such as tremors and stiffness.

Technology
State-of-the-art technology
HealthPartners and Regions Hospital are always investing in state-of-the-art equipment. In many cases, smaller incisions are required, resulting in less impact on the surrounding tissues and a faster recovery time.
Our technologically advanced operating suites were designed for your safety. Our operating rooms also feature real-time imaging during surgery. The O-arm® Multi-Dimensional Surgical Imaging System gives surgeons real-time, 3D views during complicated spinal procedures. We also have access to state-of-the-art Ultra-High Resolution MRI for situations that require accuracy beyond standard imaging. Both technologies assist the neurosurgeon in precise placement and movements during intricate surgeries.
