Pelvic pain

It can be difficult to talk about, but many men and women experience pelvic pain and issues with intimacy. This can be frustrating to live with. The highly skilled therapists at Regions Hospital Rehabilitation Institute are here to help.

Our physical therapists have specialized and advanced training in the anatomy and function of the pelvis, pelvic floor muscles and surrounding structures. We will conduct a complete exam to determine the issues involved and will develop a personalized treatment plan to meet your concerns and challenges.

Common pelvic pain conditions treated in women:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bladder inflammation/interstitial cystitis
  • Coccyx/tailbone pain
  • Inability to tolerate vaginal penetration/vaginismus
  • Irritation of the pudendal nerve/Pudendal neuralgia
  • Pain from scarring, adhesions or after surgery pain
  • Pain in the vaginal area or vulva/Vestibulitis and vulvodynia
  • Painful intercourse/dyspareunia
  • Painful urination or defecation

Common pelvic pain conditions treated in men:

  • Coccyx/tailbone pain
  • Enlarged prostate/BPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Follow-up to prostate surgery
  • Irritation of the pudendal nerve/Pudendal neuralgia
  • Pain from scarring, adhesions or after surgery pain
  • Painful erection or pain with ejaculation
  • Painful urination or defecation, urinary frequency and urgency
  • Sports related pelvic pain

Treatment may include:

  • Pelvic floor exercises and biofeedback. We will help you learn how to control the muscles in the pelvis. This may include computerized feedback so you can be sure you are exercising correctly.
  • Correction of posture, pelvic alignment and muscular imbalances
  • Manual techniques to reduce pelvic floor pain and tension
  • Education to learn self-management strategies
