Saebo Arm Training Program

Regions Hospital Occupational Therapy Department offers advanced technology if you have decreased strength and motion in your hands as the result of a stroke or other neurological injury. Our occupational therapists have received specialized training in the Saebo Arm Training Program and are certified to use it in their rehabilitation programs.

The Saebo Arm Training Program is a specialized treatment approach designed to maximize your arm and hand function following a neurological injury such as a stroke. The program is designed to help you use your weak hand for grasp and release activities through use of customized hand splints developed specifically for you. While wearing the splints, you will perform specific grasp and release activities which are designed to improve the functional use of your hand. The program uses three different types of splints and an exercise program to help increase your hand function.

The SaeboFlex splint is a splint with movable parts which fits over your wrist, hand and fingers. It features a spring-loaded finger extension system that provides resistance to the muscles that are used to grasp and assists the muscles that open the hand and fingers for release of objects. It can be used with hands that have high tone or spasticity.

The SaeboReach splint is a splint with movable parts which fits over the elbow, wrist and hand and fingers and is combined with the SaeboFlex splint for the hand. The splint features an elbow extension system which provides resistance to the muscles that are used to bend the elbow and assists those muscles that are used to straighten the elbow during reaching activities. It can be used with patients who have high tone in the elbow and hand.

The SaeboStretch splint has no movable parts and fits over the forearm, wrist, hand and fingers. It is designed to prevent or decrease joint damage while maintaining or improving range of motion in the fingers and hand. This splint is usually worn at night or during rest times for prolonged stretch.

The SaeboGlide is a device to enhance your exercise program with stretches, bilateral arm exercises and gliding exercises.

You may be a candidate for the Saebo Arm Training Program if you have suffered a neurological injury that has left you with limited movement in your arm and hand. The time since your injury does not matter. Patients have shown functional improvement as much as 20 years after their injury. It is designed for people who have some shoulder and elbow movement but minimal to no hand function. You do not need to be able to open your fingers to use the splints.

If you think you may be a candidate for the Saebo Arm Training Program, you will need to be evaluated by a Saebo-trained therapist.
