Recreational Therapy services are offered to you on the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. The program is designed to help you with sustained injuries or experienced illnesses and adjust to lifestyle changes. It is also used to help prepare you to more independently participate in leisure activities following discharge from the hospital. The program even helps each person recognize the important role recreation plays in a healthy lifestyle.
The Recreational Therapist evaluates individual leisure skills and provides treatment to increase independence for home and community recreational settings. Treatments are provided individually or in small groups and include the following:
- Learning adaptive techniques for performing leisure activities
- Expanding leisure interests
- Planning and participating in community recreational outings
- Creating a leisure plan for discharge
The community outings are an important component of the program and are designed to aid you in transitioning from the hospital back into the community. Outing locations are determined based on a number of factors but may include such activities as:
- Pedestrian outings to evaluate safety in moving about in the community
- Using mass transit
- Shopping and having snacks at grocery stores and malls
- Going to prior volunteer or work locations to visit friends
- Visiting community recreation centers or senior centers
- Visiting agencies which provide services for persons with disabilities
