John M. Kuzma, MD
- Practicing Specialty: Psychiatry
Of all the branches of medicine, psychiatry is the one that really recognizes the importance of a patient's cultural, educational, social and spiritual background. I often tell students that you can have a floor filled with patients of the same diagnosis but the presentations may all be different based on the unique aspects of each individual. To me, that's what makes psychiatry both challenging and rewarding. Meeting and working with patients and their families is satisfying and inspiring.
I believe there is a biological, psychological and social component to psychiatric illness, and I strive to understand all three aspects. I encourage my patients to see how they are affected by their social situations, recognizing they are more than just a sum of their neurotransmitters. As an inpatient doctor, I understand patients do not always come to me by their own choice. I strive to balance patients' rights to make decisions with my responsibility to keep them safe so they can live the lives they want to live. Finding that balance in my practice is daunting and endlessly intriguing.
Outside of work, my focus is on family, but I also enjoy ham radio, amateur astronomy and reading everything I can get my hands on.
I am a member of the following professional associations: * American Psychological Association (APA) * Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) * American Association for Emergency Psychiatry (AAEP)
