In my practice, I focus on youth who are in foster care or have been in foster care in the past, or who are working with child protective services. I also do fetal alcohol syndrome assessments. I have a special interest in children and adolescents who have experienced abuse and neglect, because chronic stress has real effects on the body and mind. I am a fellow in medical toxicology, which means that I focus on drug overdose and addiction, environmental exposures, and harmful side effects of medications. I am particularly interested in children and adolescents who are on many medications for behavior.
As a pediatrician, I work with young people from babyhood to young adulthood. To me, preventing sickness is as important as curing it. Many parents face hard times, such as serious diseases, separation from loved ones, mental illness or drug abuse. I like to help families help their kids to be healthy and strong even when they are facing those challenges. I also enjoy working with families during the good times, teaching and learning about child development. I love to work overseas because it increases my skills and understanding. I return frequently to Haiti, where I lived for a year during medical school. When I am not working, I cook, read, hike and travel with my husband, my two sons, and our dog.
