As a practicing emergency physician, I have sought to balance biomedical and sociological approaches to patient care in urban and rural locales. My training as a medical anthropologist brought me to the emergency department (ED) where everyday care requires a social medicine perspective and attention to the social determinants of health. My teaching and research have focused on ED use for preventable conditions among priority populations, "food deserts" and diet-related ED visits, longitudinal changes in ED use among the homeless, supportive housing and reducing health disparities in emergency care.
